But picking a stone or gravel project is really only the beginning. Below, we’ll dive into how much coverage one can get from certain amounts of product before looking at what projects these stones and gravels excel within. After, we’ll see how you can work with Landscape Barn to get stone and gravel directly on site, regardless of the quantity you need!

How Much Does 1 Ton, 1 Yard, or a Truckload Cover?

The amount of stone or gravel needed for a project is always a pressing question. In general, here is what you can expect coverage-wise when employing stones and gravels:

Coverage for 1 ton of stone or gravel

1 ton of stone/gravel will get you a decent amount of coverage. Assuming you’re filling 1 inch deep, you can expect to see about 240 square feet of coverage from a ton of gravel.

Coverage for 1 cubic yard

1 cubic yard, to many people’s surprise, can cover a significant amount of surface as well. In fact, assuming the same 1 inch depth of product, 1 cubic yard of stone/gravel can cover around 300 square feet.

Coverage for a full truckload

Coverage from a truckload will vary greatly depending on the size of the truck. Single-axle dump trucks, which can carry between 10 and 13 tons of stone, can cover around 2,400 square feet with that 1 inch depth.

What Projects Each Quantity Works Best For

Naturally, the other side of the quantity discussion deals with specific projects and how much coverage they need. While these estimates will vary depending on the scale of your individual project, here are some generalities around how much stone/gravel you’ll need:

Touching up low spots in a gravel driveway

With these low spot touchups on a gravel driveway, opting for around a ton of gravel should be plenty. This allows for thorough filling of the low spots while accounting for the 5-10% extra depth required that accounts for the settling of the product. More low spots/longer driveways may require additional tonnage.

Small drainage fixes or French drain sections

With a French drain, one can expect to use about 1 cubic yard of stone/gravel for every 15 feet or so of the trench. The French drain in general requires about 18-24 inches of depth and 9-12 inches of width, subtracking the volume of the perforated pipe.

Base for a small patio or walkway

Once again largely depending on area and desired depth, a small patio around 10 feet by 10 feet will need about 2 cubic yards of gravel. This allows for adequate depth (around 4-6 inches) while being able to reach the bounds of the patio.

Naturally, some of these projects, especially as you scale them up, require increasingly more gravel and stone. When you need more than 1 ton, consider these factors:

Combining orders for larger coverage areas

Planning ahead and combining future orders into one is a great way to achieve a consistent product across your project. These larger orders can achieve a significant amount of coverage, surely enough for any driveway, patio, drain, or other project that requires multiple tons of material.

Planning delivery for multi-ton projects

While all that stone/gravel may be necessary for the project, considering how to receive deliveries should also be important. Whether you want to receive a giant volume at once or want more spreadout delivery, having a place to store stone effectively is key.

Delivery vs Pickup for Bulk Stone & Gravel

Depending on the size of your order and your access to trucks, Landscape Barn offers delivery or pick up for your bulk stone. If you have the hauling capacity, picking up can be a great way to speed up your product acquisition while saving some money on delivery fees. For those without the capabilities to pick up bulk stone themselves, having a delivery makes receiving tons of stone easier than ever before.
