#67 Stone: Where to Buy & What It Is

What Is #67 Stone?

#67 stone is a washed, angular crushed stone used in construction and landscape projects. The stone’s fine-to-medium particle mix makes it an excellent choice when you need smoother compaction without losing strength.

How Is #67 Stone Sized?

#67 stone is generally sized around ¾ inch or less. Some pieces can measure as small as ⅛ inch.

Common Uses for #67 Stone

Walkways and pathways

The size and compaction of #67 stone makes it ideal for walkways and pathways as the stone tends to settle tightly and prevent softness or shifting.

Drainage applications

The angular nature of #67 stone creates a permeability that allows water to flow through.

Base material for patios and pavers

Because #67 is slightly smaller than other stone sizes, it is ideal for slab bases and in concrete mixes used in patios and pavers.

Why #67 Stone Works Well for Certain Projects

#67 stone is ideal for many projects due to the fact that it is angular, well-graded, and easily compacted nature. These elements create stable, durable bases for roads, slabs, and other landscaping projects.

#67 Stone vs Other Popular Crushed Stone Sizes

#57 stone

#67 stone is slightly smaller (often ¾ inch or less) and is ideal for concrete bases, fillers, and road bases. #57 stone is larger (⅜ inch - 1 inch) and is better for projects where effective drainage is important.

3/4” stone

#67 stone and ¾” stone can be interchangeable as both stones measure around the same size. Some #67 stones measure even smaller, down to ⅛ inch. Both can be used for a variety of landscape projects.

Stone dust

#67 stones are angular, crushed stones that measure around ¾” or smaller. Stone dust is a fine, powdery material. Both stones can be used to create stable bases, but #67 stone supports drainage while stone dust is used for non-draining bases.

When Is #67 Stone Not the Best Choice?

#67 stone is not the best choice under the following circumstances:

  • When maximum drainage is needed: While #67 does have permeability that allows for drainage, the smaller particles and dust can clog high-volume drainage systems over time.
  • Heavy Duty Driveways or Highways: While #67 works for base layers, it does not lock together as tightly as some other stones, making it not the best choice for roads with heavy, consistent, high-speed traffic.
  • Steep Slopes: Because #67 often contains a mix of sizes, it may not lock as well as some other stone sizes, making it more prone to washing out on steep slopes during inclement weather.

How Much #67 Stone You Need for Your Project

Recommended Calculation Steps:

Determine Area: Length (ft) x Width (ft) x Depth (ft)

Determine Cubic Yards Needed: Area / 27 = Cubic Yards

Consider Waste Factor: Add an extra 10-15% of stone to account for settling

Installation Tips for #67 Stone

For a long lasting installation of #67 stone, excavate the project area 4-6 inches deep, compact the subgrade, and then install edge restraints to prevent spreading. Be sure to lay the stone in 2-3 inch layers, compacting each layer thoroughly. Ensure proper drainage by creating a slight slope.
